The more Huntley picked over his predicament, the more he realised his prospects hinged on recruiting Carr to his cause. Sooner or later the police would establish that he had been the last to see the girls before they disappeared. A man alone in his house, who had been linked to sex crimes … the police would work it out. The only way he could beat them was to make Carr his partner in crime and persuade her to give him an alibi.

Armed with this conviction, Huntley made two crucial phone calls on Monday August 5. At 6.56 am he rang Carr at her mother’s house, waking her from a deep, drink-induced slumber. He sounded tired and cold; he said there had been an emergency in Soham, and he had been helping police search for two children who were missing. Later that day, at 4.25 pm, he called Carr again.

What Huntley had to say would come as a bolt from the blue to his fiancée. Up to now she had been making full use of her four days of freedom, going on a weekend of drinking and dancing in the company of her mother Shirley Capp and other friends. The mother and daughter duo downed pints of lager and partied the nights away, clubbing until 2 am on Saturday and Sunday.

According to Shirley, Carr would be stricken with guilt when she realised she’d been out revelling as Holly and Jessica were being kidnapped. But at the time, she was free from such troubles. She had been given a lift to Grimsby on Saturday by Huntley’s parents Kevin and Lynda, and had wasted no time in getting out on the town for a binge that lasted all weekend. On Sunday she and Shirley went on a pub crawl, drinking in the Parity Bar, the Yarborough Hotel, the Exchange Fun Bar and Chicago Rock. Carr was in the mood to party; after her row with Huntley over the telephone earlier that evening, she was determined to enjoy herself. She gulped down vodka and cokes and was soon drunk.

A few hours into her session she spotted 17-year-old Mark Thomas in the Parity Bar. The six-foot-five-inch youth towered above the rest of the crowd, and Carr made straight for him. ‘She couldn’t keep her hands off me,’ he said. ‘It was amazing – she didn’t care who was watching or what they thought. She certainly knew what she wanted. Her hands were all over the place and she was desperate to go to bed with me.’ At first Mark tried to escape Carr’s attentions, but his friends bet him £20 that he wouldn’t kiss her. So he allowed her to clasp him in a passionate embrace, and Carr spent several minutes kissing him in front of her mother.

Mark eventually made it clear that he would not sleep with Carr that night, so she abandoned him for another target. Her eyes fell upon super-fit soldier Joseph Abakah, who had just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.
